Arthouse presents a fun mix, or should we say re-mix, of contemporary arts this Easter weekend.

As part of the monthly series Mixed Grill, Arthouse will present the insightful and entertaining documentary of sampling and mash up culture RiP: A Remix Manifesto.

Web activist Brett Gaylor and musician Greg Gillis, better known as Girl Talk, serve as your digital tour guides on a probing investigation into how culture builds upon culture in the information age.

Utilizing technical expertise and a ferocious creative streak, Girl Talk repositions popular music to create a wild and edgy dialogue between artists from all genres and eras. But are his practices legal? Do his methods of frenetic appropriation embrace collaboration in its purest sense? Or are they infractions of creative integrity and violations of copyright?

Also on the Mixed Grill program, is work from a diversity of artists, all responding to the theme of sampling and remixing. Visual works by artists Rob Eakin, Clarinet Bayonet, File_Error, and Nicholas Mills, while local Graf crew The Next Page have a mystery live graf piece to unveil during the night.

Performance artists include the mysterious and athletic Font, the clowning of Hanzard and sound performance by Clarinet Bayonet.

Meanwhile Arthouse DJ’s featuring Jack The Ripper, No_Request and Good Will Hunting are promising a colourful live mash-up of old beats and treats, mixed with a good dose of magic, vaudeville and video intrigue.

DJ No_Request has been sampling and remixing live for over a decade, largely as part of the local arts/underground scene, and draws from 70’s pop and rock to funk, breaks, world beat and new pop for cultural references and smashed-up live re-mixes.

He has collaborated and supported DJ Olive (NY) and Deadbeat (Can), and played the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane and Sound of Failure Festival in Sydney.

“Arthouse DJ’s promises a booty shakin, mashed-up dance floor, surreal slabs of magic and vaudeville, and a back-to-back live audio and video set of tricks and treats.”

Mixed Grill: featuring Rip: A Remix Manifesto, is on Saturday 24th April, at Arthouse, 240 Scott St, via McCoombe St. Doors 6.00pm, Film 7.00pm, and show from 8.00pm. Tix are $7 / 5 at the door.
