Mixed Grill - Pacifica - featuring Mike Coper (UK) and Tabu (1931).
Sat 16th March

The Arthouse event Mixed Grill features the silent film Tabu (1931), and a huge live music and performance program celebrating our place in the Pacific.

Mixed Grill – Pacifica, will feature legendary UK guitarist and artist Mike Cooper, doing a live score to the classic silent film Tabu (1931). For the past 45 years he has been an international musical explorer pushing the boundaries of his music.

Tabu is the story of a young Tahitian couple who fall in love but are prevented from pursuing the relationship by local customs. They run away to various adventures which include corrupt colonials, killer sharks, pearls …..and a very sad ending.

An “exotica” masterpiece, it was to be the last film from film-maker F.W. Murnau as he was killed in a car crash one week before it was premiered in Berlin. In 1931 Murnau started filming TABU together with the legendary pioneering documentary film maker Robert Flaherty. Flaherty had become known for his previous semi-documentary style of films Nanook Of The North and Moana.

By 1931 both directors were both well known but both had experienced problems with Hollywood and the film business. They decided to collaborate, formed a production company, bought a sailing vessel and sailed to Tahiti to shoot TABU. However, they parted company during the shooting and it has since become known as Murnau’s film.

Mike Cooper plays lap steel guitar / electronics and sings. Initially a folk-blues guitarist he is as responsible as anyone else - and more so than many - for ushering in the blues boom in the U.K. in the late '60s.

Ranging freely through his own idiosyncratic original songs, traditional country blues, folk, free improvisation, pop songs, exotica, electronic music, electro-acoustic music, and ‘sonic gestural’ playing utilising open tunings and extended guitar techniques.

The Mixed Grill program draws from our broad region, with Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Pacific Islander and Australian artists. The massive line-up includes reggae dub specialists Reggae Bliss, featuring Torres Strait Island legend Lonnie Pedro, Uke soul popstars Bosko & Honey, instrumental surf-rock riders Polymantra, the deep sounds of local Samoan legend Mingo Tuala, experimental performance art of Aboriginal artist Zane Saunders with collaborator File_Error, performances by the absurd Font and Melbourne's cross dressing Dino Divo, plus wicked new Pacific music by DJ Tonester.
