As CoCA heads into a very busy month it won’t be until September 1 that film returns to the venue.

Awww!

Not to worry. Cairns is vibrant place and we have a few alternate venues and screen offerings for you.

Here’s an interesting screen line up from ART HOUSE to sate the appetite in July and I’ll be back a bit later this week to remind you all about the STARRY NIGHTS outdoor program. (if you can’t wait visit starrynightscinema.com.au for all the info.)

Mixed Grill, as part of the On Edge festival, will feature guest filmmaking and performance artists, Myriam Van Imschoot (Belgium) and Marcus Bergner (Sydney), who will present their experimental films, and perform live.

Myriam Van Imschoot is a Belgian artist who lives in Brussels, who makes performance and installation work based on the voice, sonic archival documents, oral transmissions, and ephemeral gestures.

In her 20min work LIFT, the spectator is taken on a vertical 'road trip'. The camera moves upwards alongside the facade of a skyscraper, in one long traveling shot, from the ground floor to the roof.

When not choosing for the public space as a terrain for vocal performances, her work is presented in exhibitions, galleries and theaters across Europe, including Kaaitheater, Sculpture International Rotterdam, Binaural Sound, Muu Gallery and Museo Reina Sofia Madrid.

Marcus Bergner is an Australian artist and filmmaker who has lived and worked for extended periods in London, Rome and Prague. He has produced close to thirty experimental films that have been screened widely in Australia, Europe and America. Musical Four Letters is his 1989 work shot on 16mm utilising found footage, this work is based on a linguistic phenomenon identified by the eighteen century German scientist and aphorist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, as ‘ hieroglyphics for the ear’.
