End Credits Film Club in partnership with the Understory Film Festival will host a weekend workshop called ‘Screen Stories’ on the weekend of 4 & 5 March. Supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund the course will run from 9.30am-4.30pm each day at the Botanic Gardens Visitor’s Centre and is designed to develop and strengthen screen writing skills for Understory Film Festival participants. All participants will need to prepare a short film synopsis or detailed story outline (1 paragraph – 1 A4 page maximum) to work with over the duration of the workshop.

Screen Stories is specifically aimed at emerging filmmakers and screenwriters in the region to improve writing skills, and creating stronger narratives around their own short film concept. The workshop will be delivered by Jonathon Olgilvie, an industry professional from the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) who has made numerous short films that have screened at major film festivals and have sold internationally. Despondent Divorcee and This Film is a Dog were both selected for Official Competition at the Cannes Film Festival. This Film Is A Dog also won Tropfest.

The AFTRS is the leading institution for the education and training of creative talent in the screen arts and broadcast industries in Australia. Using industry experts, the school has been delivering training for the film, television and radio industries for almost 40 years and is pleased to provide a practical workshop to emerging filmmakers and screenwriters in Far North Queensland to improve writing skills and creative narratives for short film productions.

End Credits Film Club is dedicated to fostering an active screen culture in the region and has supported the Understory Film Festival since inception, providing important resources and advice, including judging the 40-50 films that are submitted each year. With Understory moving into its fourth year, End Credits can see that the Screen Stories workshop will add great value to our filmmaking community and progress the standard of the films presented by the festival.

The screenplay is the essence of every film and being able to engage an industry professional to facilitate the creation of stronger narratives for short films will enhance pathways towards sustainable filmmaking careers in Far North Queensland. This is a wonderful opportunity for our filmmaking community to attend this workshop free of charge with thanks to the Regional Arts Development Fund.

Places are limited to 15. To apply, register your interest together with your short film synopsis or detailed story outline to cp at cairns.qld.gov.au by cob Monday 20 February. Successful applicants will be notified by Friday 24 February. For any enquiries please telephone 4032 6656.
