We have a special treat lined up for our Unseen Cinema patrons this Sunday when SWEEP, a short film by Keely-Jane Kershaw screens before our feature MAQUIA: WHEN THE PROMISED FLOWER BLOOMS.

SWEEP was Keely’s first film, an animation made as a student at Griffith Film School, and accepted by the Cannes Film Festival to screen in the 2018 short film program.

4:30pm Sunday August 19
MAQUIA: WHEN THE PROMISED FLOWER BLOOMS
Event Cinema Cairns Central.
Dir. Mari Okada- Japan (MA) 115mins
In Japanese English subtitles

In her directorial debut Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, Mari Okada weaves a beautiful story about motherhood, aging, and loss. Epic yet intimate, this is a visually gorgeous and emotionally lush fantasy drama about love and hope set in a beautifully realized invented world.

…the story of Maquia and her odyssey into motherhood is both intimate and monumental. - FILMINK REVIEW <https://www.filmink.com.au/reviews/maquia-promised-flower-blooms/>
